It is no surprise to anyone that the fuel prices are straining houshold
budgets. McNamara's Automotive has seen a very noticeable increase in customers seeking advise on how they can improve
the fuel economy of their vehicles. We have compliled a list of the most effective way's to stretch the miles per
gallon of your ride!
1) Check your pressure!
Low
air pressure in your tires causes an increase in their resistance to roll. The cost of
air
pressure = 5-7% loss of fuel economy + shorter tire life.
2) Are you really driving straight
ahead?
Improper wheel alignment is often found to be the cause of poor tire wear
and pulling
to one side while driving. Few people consider that
out of align wheels can increase
fuel consumption by 2-3% !
3)
Shed some weight for the summer!
Reducing the vehicles weight increases fuel
mileage. Are you still driving around with
that bag of sand from winter in
the trunk? How about those cases of bottled water
that never made
it to the house after your last trip to the grocery store?
4) Roof
top carriers.
Have you noticed all the vehicles on the road with rooftop carriers?
With vacation
season upon us peole are taking trips to the beach
or mountains. A rooftop carrier will
cost you a 21% increase in fuel consumption....Just
how much $$ is that. Think of it
this way. At $4.00 per gallon at the
pump plus an increase of 21% would be equivelent to paying
$4.84 per
gallon.
5) Breath easy!
The average air filter cost
about $25.00 to replace. A dirty air filter will cost you a
5-8%
increase in fuel consumption.
6) Set the cruise control. (Hidden message to my sister here!)
setting the cruise on the highway at 60-65 miles per hour can increase fuel mileage
by 2-3 miles per gallon! It will also save you that speeding ticket.
7) Do you get ZERO miles per gallon? (again my sister) :-P
Using
a remote start or ideling the engine while you are not going anywhere is the
same
as getting ZERO miles per gallon!! Now that is expensive fuel ! So if you stop
to chat with the neighbor...turn off the engine !
8) Windows open or A/C on?
This is a very debatable issue. One I have personally tested out myself.
I found
NO fuel economy advantage by leaving the A/C off and the windows open!
So don't sweat
it...crank the A/C and drive in comfort ! :-)
